Alumni 45th Reunion

Class Year: 1962

Reunion Date: August 2007

A weekend of events brought together the Class of '62 for its 45th reunion. Friday evening classmates gathered at the Oregon Garden for the alumni dinner and auction. This year Gail Jacobsen Kirsch pulled together a basket of memories for bidding. Among the many items:  Jack Hande books of Silverton stories, old metal roller skates WITH the key, gums and candies of our era (remember Black Jack and Beamans?), and a Cheech/Chong CD, "Senior Trip" - or what chaperones should be glad never happened on OUR senior trip!

Saturday morning classmates under the direction of Sally Eldred Meisenheimer and Donna Rasmussen McColly inflated helium balloons and hung streamers on the class float. With the class seated on hay bales and Denny Taylor behind the wheel, the float with its happy bunch of people made its way through downtown Silverton, tossing candy to the kiddies and waving to the crowd along the way.

After the parade ended, classmates, family and friends headed to Mel Ulven’s beautiful farm in Hubbard for a BBQ of beef, pork, Voget's Hubbard ham and Mel's special secret ingredients baked beans. A special treat made by Delores Laudette Linschied was not one but two reunion sheet cakes which made the trip from Redmond in one piece! Classmates traveled great distances to re-connect, visit, and just enjoy each other's company: CA, WA, AZ, SC, GA, Redmond, Hermiston, Medford, The Dalles, and of course, Silverton and the surrounding area. Special surprises were classmates we had not seen in 40-45 years.

The class no longer waits to get together every five years and now holds yearly summer mini-reunions to keep in touch, usually at classmates' homes. One summer we did have an enjoyable afternoon under a canopy at the Oregon Garden w/ deli sack lunches and a tram ride through the Garden —our conductor and guest was none other than Gene Mulkey who was teacher to many of us at Mark Twain. Another guest was Jack Hande who guided us through Geometry and the outdoors. In the works is an old-fashioned picnic at Silver Creek Falls...... (a very special place to some classmates!)
